Runner Crate May 2016

Runner Crate is a subscription box for runners. It’s $35 a month (plus $15 shipping to Canada) for 6-8 brand name fitness supplement samples, apparel, workout plans, meal recipes, gym related gear and bling.

*I received this box free for review purposes but all opinions are my own

First Look

I’m always happy when I see a full box, I was excited to dig in. I kind of really like the fact that there is no crinkle paper padding the box. I really hate that stuff and it always seems like such a waste to me. There was a sheet included as well with information about the products.

The Goods

Runner Crate May

Running Dream Running Belt–This is basically a fanny pack so you can carry your keys, phone etc. with you while you run. The quality of it seems decent, not super cheap like you’d get at a dollar stuff, but also not high end. I’m really not sure if I’ll use this. I have a hydration belt that I use and it has a little pouch that I can put keys etc in. I also have a FlipBelt that I use if I want my phone with me. It’s the only product I’ve found that I can actually fit my phone (Note) in.

ProTings Zesty Nacho–These are “delightful baked crisps with 15 grams of protein”. They are also gluten free, GMO free and vegan. I’m happy to see a zesty nacho flavor. I’m pretty selective when it comes to my flavors so this is a win. I’ve been seeing this brand more in the stores and popping up in other subscription boxes so I’m looking forward to trying them out.

This seems like a healthier (and possibly tastier) version of Handi-snacks where you’d have the cheese and crackers/sticks that you could dip in. You can’t really go wrong with a snack like this, though it’s definitely not the lowest calorie option. My packaging also has chocolate all over it, you can see a bit on the side but there is a lot more on the bottom. Thankfully it didn’t get on everything else. I’m a bit worried that means that the packaging opened and the pretzels are going to taste a bit off/stale.

Detoxifying Hot Cereal–This one is a blend of maqui berries, blackberries, blueberries and dragonfruit. That combination does sound pretty amazing, but I might have to give this one to Ian. It’s got oats, as well as quinoa and amaranth. Oats react weirdly with me so I don’t think I’ll risk it. It does sound like this would offer a lot of benefits though. There are ingredients to help aid digestion and healthy liver function, soluble and insoluble fiber to help your body’s natural processes so you can feel light & energized, and it’s free from wheat, added sugar, dairy and soy. Sounds like a pretty neat breakfast!

Go Raw Pumpkin Seed Bar–This bar is high in fiber, Omega 3 and Omega 6. It also contains dates, agave nectar, sprouted flax seed and Celtic sea salt. It’s also gluten free, nut free, vegan and non-GMO verified. I’m not a fan of pumpkin flavoring, but I’m not sure if I’ve ever actually had pumpkin seeds. I think I may actually risk it with this, though I’m a bit unsure about the dates! I like that there aren’t a whole bunch of other ingredients and it’s a nice change to have a bar that doesn’t have oats in it.

Runner Crate May

Epic Bar Chicken Sriracha–I feel like I got lucky here as the other option was a salmon bar. I will definitely accept chicken! Sriracha flavoring is huge right now but I don’t think I’ve actually had it, even though I have a bottle sitting in my cupboard. It has 15g of whole muscle meat protein with a custom sriracha spice blend. It also has a nutty taste of organic chia seeds. I’m pretty excited about this. It’s only 100 calories so it’s actually a fairly low calorie snack option but with a ton of benefits.

Runner Crate May

Almond Butter–The only ingredients in this are roasted almonds and sea salt. There are no processed sugar or preservatives. This packet has 7G of protein and no dairy. I actually haven’t had almond butter yet but I do like almonds so I assume I will like it.

Runner Crate May

Every month contains Runner Crate’s own spin on some bling. I have some mixed feelings on this “bling”. I was pretty excited when I saw the spoiler because I love Star Wars. What a perfect theme for May! You can use some AA batteries and flip a switch to light up the medal. It will light up solid, flash slow, or flash fast.  The issue here is that I don’t consider this “bling”. This is a piece of plastic with a theme printed on it. I run Virtual 5k’s every month and love my collection of medals. I can’t hang this up with them. I can’t even put this around my neck! I would love to see them switch to a traditional medal that’s actually made of metal.

Final Thoughts

Overall I have pretty good feelings about this box. I like the variety of snack items, though I would have loved to see some more low calorie options. I like that there was a lot of protein snacks though, that’s a great option to have after a run. I do feel as though the value isn’t totally there in this particular box. A lot of this is stuff you’ll find in other healthy boxes but for a cheaper price. The fact that this box had bling sets it apart from those others though. Had the bling been an actual medal I think I would have felt better about the value, but that plastic just makes it seem kind of cheap.

If you want to try this box out you can use the discount code ANDREAROCKS to get 10% off. You have until May 23rd to get June’s box. I’m skipping June but plan on giving July another go. I’m super intrigued about July because I got an email about them securing a deal that will give the box TREMENDOUS value and they wanted to know shoe size. If I get a pair of socks I’m going to be quite disappointed!
