November Update & December Goals

Rather than a yearly bucket list or New Years resolutions, I decided to pick one word to represent 2017 and set up mini goals for each month to help me reach my ultimate goals. The word I chose is STRIVE, and you can find out more behind my reasoning by reading this post.

November

I know that I say this every month, but November?! How has that happened so quickly? There are two months left in this year and they are going to pass way too quick. November and December are always tough months for me, so I want to stay focused on my goals and make sure that I end off the year on a high note.

I will strive…to be healthy

  • Meal plan – YES. I didn’t follow it very strictly, but I always had an idea of what to make for each day and did my grocery shopping based on that. Some things changed, but I never felt completely lost on what to make.
  • Be mindful of my snacking – NO. Hard no on this one. I’ve gotten better as the month has passed, my snacks have been more focused on Christmas oranges and carrots. I really need to focus in December though.
  • Go to the gym at least 15 times – YES. 17! It feels great to be getting more into that routine again. Now I just need to keep it up!
  • Follow through with my workout plan – YES. I didn’t 100% follow the plan I had, but I took inspiration from it and didn’t feel lost of what to do at any point. I dove a lot deeper into TRX options, which I’m loving. I’ve had some days when I can really feel as though my muscles had been worked, which is something I haven’t felt in awhile.

I will strive..to spend less

  • Spend less than November 2016 ($1138.66) – YES. $804.18/$1000.33. There is a reason for the two numbers here. I had set aside $200 from a past freelance writing project for re-doing my closet. The $200 ended up going towards paint for the closet, some piping, a new light in our bathroom and couch cushions for the living room. I had debated about whether or not to include that here since I tracked it separately and it was extra money. In the case of full disclosure, I decided to include my expenses with, and without, that amount.
  • No new clothes unless they have been on my wishlist for a minimum of a month – NO.  I will say, I did do quite well with this. As a reminder, I do this tracking according to my credit card cycle. Therefore, October 23-November 23 are the dates we are dealing with here. Lucky for me, that doesn’t include Black Friday shopping. I did make one clothing-related purchase though, and I have no regrets. (see below)

I will strive..to experience more

  • Start my closet project – YES. I’m so excited for this. It’s almost complete, I just need to deal with my purses and scarves. I have an idea for both of those, it’s just a matter of buying supplies and putting it together. I will be doing a full post on it once it’s complete, but here’s a small sneak peek!
  • Have a get-together with friends – YES. We had a great get-together, you can find out more about it on my post with 5 tips for a successful night in. I also include some information about skinnypasta, a totally guilt-free way to enjoy pasta!
  • Decorate for Christmas! – YES. I have been so excited about this. We got out tree up, plus some miscellaneous decorations on our ‘fireplace’ and coffee table. I’m so excited for our first Christmas in our house, and to have the space to have the tree up this year!
  • Cook something new – NO. I really didn’t I stuck to tried and true favourites through the month. Maybe in December!

December

Not going to lie, I’m happy that this is my last month doing goals like this. I don’t think I’m going to continue this exact format next year. I feel like things started to become a bit redundant, and I wasn’t really accomplishing anything new. I will do a full recap of my year at the end of December though and will look forward to the new year.

I will strive…to be healthy

  • Go to the gym at least 15 times
  • Meal prep – I want to put more thought into my food and spend some time each Sunday preparing lunches and snacks for the week.
  • Meal plan – I want to make more meals and be prepared ahead of time.
  • Run a 5K – on December 1st I signed up for my fourth year of the Saskatchewan Marathon, which is held in May. I haven’t been running lately, so I want to run that distance at least once.
  • Continue trying new workouts with weights
  • Do not gain weight – Rather than losing weight, I just don’t want to gain weight. November & December are usually tough months with all the treats around, and the freezing cold weather, so I just don’t want to see any gains.

I will strive..to spend less

  • Spend less than December 2016 ($1610.62) – Honestly, this should be pretty easy. I do have some extra expenses since I’m doing a gift exchange with a few friends, as well as participating in Reddit Secret Santa, but I have no doubt I will spend less.
  • Spend under $1000 – since my first spending goal should be fairly easy, I want to challenge myself here.

I will strive..to experience more

  • Cook at least one new dish – I’ve started exchanging recipes with a few of my friends, so I’d like to try at least one of those!
  • Do something fun for my birthday – My birthday is on December 12th, and I don’t really care about it like I used to. I’d like to do at least one fun thing in honour of it though.
  • Mail Christmas gifts – I’m still waiting on a few things to come in, but I just need to make sure that I don’t put it off once I have everything!
  • Do something fun for New Year’s Eve – Not going to lie, I have fallen asleep WAY before midnight these past few years. I have no intentions of going out that night, but I’d like to stay away and do something fun at home.
  • Complete my closet project – I want to get my purses and scarves back into my closet, which means buying supplies and putting it together!

I will strive..to grow my blog

  • Increase my social media following (Facebook: 212, Instagram: 376)
  • Figure out a direction for 2018 – I feel like my blog has transitioned quite a bit over this last year. I’d like to do some planning and figure out exactly what I would like this place to be.
  • Plan a new goal system – I definitely want to set goals for myself in 2018, I just need to pick a format.

I have every intention of ending this year on a high note, and I know the goals I have set up will ensure that happens. Here’s hoping I can follow through with them!

What are you most looking forward to in December? What are you hoping to accomplish?

  • Wow! well done, some food for thought as I must admit I am not really a goal setter, I do get things done just not so methodically. Thanks for sharing your process xx
