March Update & April Goals

Rather than a yearly bucket list or New Years resolutions, I decided to pick one word to represent 2017, and set up mini goals for each month to help me reach my ultimate goals. The word I chose is STRIVE, and you can find out more behind my reasoning by reading this post.

March

I will strive…to be healthy.

  • Go to the gym 23 times. YES. Okay, technically not the gym 23 times, two of those times were brisk walks outside during my lunch break. I decided to count those because they landed on my cardio days and I walk for the same length of time as I would at the gym. I’m really excited that the weather has been warming up and that I’m able to pick up this routine again.
  • Continue to meal plan and incorporate vegetables. I know that I have the workout part down, I still need to focus on my food intake. YES. I have actually done REALLY well on my food intake. I’ve definitely eaten some junk, but I can only really pinpoint one bad weekend. Other than that, I have been having more veggies, meal planning and significantly cut back on snacking.
  • Stick to my workout plan. YES. I have a 12 week workout plan that includes weights, and I really want to complete at least 6 weeks of it. So far, I have stuck to the first four weeks and it has now become part of my workout routine. I have made some tweaks to it, but I’ve been following the general idea and have been happy with my progress. I’ll likely repeat the first 6 weeks at least one more time before I continue onto the second half.
  • Lose 5+ pounds, or any inches. YES. So my weight really didn’t change at all, but I did lose some inches. I also did a comparison picture from January 1st to the end of March and there is a very visible difference.

I will strive..to spend less.

  • Spend less than March 2016 ($1291.04). YES. $861. 56. Totally nailed this month! I could have done WAY better because I definitely made some splurge purchases this month. On the plus side, I have some more changes coming to this blog. I have some AMAZING clothing boutiques to share with you, and some cute pieces I’ve got from them! I’m looking forward to including some more fashion related topics.
  • Move $200 into savings. I didn’t get to do this in February, so I’m hoping to offset that this month. YES. I was able to move this over since I was able to keep my spending so low. I could probably move some more over but I anticipate I will have some extra expenses in April that will offset this.
  • Keep my spending under $1000. I’m putting this as a separate goal because I feel as though it will take a different focus than just spending less than last year. YES. As you can see above, I met this goal by $138.44!

I will strive..to declutter.

  • Keep on top of the recycling. YES. At the beginning of the month I took out all the cardboard, and I took all our bottles & cans to the recycling depot. This cleaned up our laundry room immensely. The cardboard also hasn’t piled up like it normally does since I have had less boxes coming in, and we aren’t eating a ton of food that comes in boxes either.
  • Clean/organize one area. YES. Along with taking out the recycling, I also gave the kitchen a good cleaning. I went through the cupboards and re-organized them and pulled out stuff we never use. I also cleaned all the cupboard doors and washed the floor. Feels great to have an organized kitchen!

I will strive..to experience more

  • Have two fun outings. YES. We went out for supper one night with a friend we hadn’t seen in a little bit, and did lunch and breakfast with another friend. The movie theater chain here also has “family favorites” movies on Saturday morning for $3. This month they were showing Space Jam so we went and saw that. It was such fun to see that on the big screen, it was just as good as I remember it being!
  • Try something new. NO. I had been doing so well with this list, but I really can’t think of one new thing I tried. I really need to be more intentional with this one!
  • Have some “me” time. NO. On one hand, I could probably say yes to this. Ian participated in a curling bonspiel at the start of the month and I stayed at home. Since I spent most of that time cleaning/organizing though, I’m just not going to count it. It would have been a great time to have a soak in the tub or get a pedicure though!
  • Finish Hobbit and read another book. YES. I finished The Hobbit, and read a book called “Under The Overpass”. It’s a real story of two men who decided to leave everything behind and live on the streets as a way to rediscover their faith in God and find out what it means to be homeless. I also have about 20 pages left of my third book, “A Million Miles In A Thousand Years”. This book is about the elements of a good story and how to live your life to reflect that, rather than having it all be meaningless.

April

March was a very successful month! By this point a lot of my previous goals have became the norm for me and are just weekly habits rather than goals I feel I need to set. Meal planning and veggie intake is probably the best example of this, I don’t even think about having to do either of them anymore because they just happen.

I’m looking forward to April. It’s starting to get light out as I leave the gym, which means it’s only a matter of time until I can go running outside in the mornings! I also anticipate that weekend outdoor runs should be starting up sometime this month. Ian and I also are going to be taking a weekend away during the month. We both have a four day weekend over Easter and so we are going to use that to go to Calgary. I’ve got a few posts planned surrounding that trip, so I’m excited to work on those.

I will strive…to be healthy.

  • Workout 18 times. This number is a bit lower this month. A big part of this is the four days that we will be spending in Calgary. The hotel we are staying at is supposed to have a really good fitness center so I’m *hoping* to put that to use, but it will really depend on our plans and schedule. There is also a steam room which I would LOVE to use at least once.
  • Take lunch time walks at least twice a week. Right now I’m aiming for only twice because the weather can be a bit dicey in April. It really is a great way to break up my day a bit, plus it’s good for me to have that movement rather than spend 8 straight hours sitting. Besides, it’s so nice to feel the sun and warm air after the winters Saskatchewan gets!
  • Focus on minimal snacking. I’ve done pretty good with this through March, but it’s something I still want to keep my focus on. A lot of the reason I snack is because I get restless, I recently bought a fidget cube and I think that will help me with that.
  • Run 5k once a week. I am signed up for the 5k with Saskatchewan Marathon, which is at the end of May. I want to do better than last year, which means I need to practice! I also want to run outside at least once.

I will strive..to spend less.

  • April of 2016 I spent $1554.51. My expenses were a bit higher for a few reasons. I flew down to New Jersey to work an event for Moxie. Flights and hotel were covered, but I did have some food expenses and had to check a bag at the airport, which was an additional charge. Ian and I also took a road trip, which meant a bit of shopping. I also did some online shopping, on top of a bunch of sub boxes. It was just a bad month in general for my budget! This is the only limitation I’m going to add though. There will be three nights hotel and some Calgary expenses on this budget and so I don’t anticipate it looking like last month.

I will strive..to declutter.

  • Get rid of clothes. I have two large bags of clothes in my closet that I plan to get rid of, or have posted on Facebook to sell. I want to do one more go-through of items in my closet and take things to donation or to Plato’s Closet to sell.
  • Clean out my car. I’ve been meaning to for awhile and this is a great month to get it done since I have a road trip coming up in it. There is some garbage, and also a bunch of CD cases. I would like to get all those moved into a binder so there is less clutter, and it can be more easily hidden.

I will strive..to experience more

  • Raise some money for Easter Seals Drop Zone. You can click the link to learn more about what this is about, and just what my goal is with this.
  • Try something new. Fourth time is a charm, right? One of these months I will be able to say YES to this.
  • Read a book. I want to finish the last 20 pages of my current one, and I want to read “Yes Please” by Amy Poehler.
  • Try at least two new recipes. I’m always looking for new ideas to mix up supper time rather than defaulting to my usual go-to recipes. Variety is the spice of life, or something like that.
