As part of my focus on eating healthy and losing weight, I have been very interested in superfoods, nutrients, herbs etc. I’m not going to lie, I like food, candy, sweets, all of it. This love of food makes it very difficult to actually eat healthily or see many results, especially since I just crave eating. This has sparked my interest in natural aids to weight loss, ways to feel more full, and just feeling good.

Enter Maca. I recently heard of Maca at a festival where there was a table set up of different natural healthy foods such as Goji Berries, Coconut Oil, different kinds of nuts etc. Talking to the lady that worked there, and telling her my long-term goals, she directed me to Maca. On the packaging, there were several health benefits listed. I decided to do some research and ended up going back and purchasing this powder.

Maca is a root that belongs to the radish family and is grown in the Andes Mountain in Peru. It’s most commonly available in powder form but can also come in capsules. The most common colors that Maca is found are black, red and yellow. Yellow has been found to help with fertility and symptoms of menopause. For obvious reasons, I obviously did not purchase yellow. Black Maca is said to help with digestion, boost your mood, help with your sleep quality, and boost your immune system. It is also great at increasing energy levels. Red Maca was what I purchased. Red Maca has the most benefits of the three. It seems to do a combination of what the other 2 do. The benefits of red Maca are: increased mood, higher libido, balances hormones, reduces symptoms of menopause/PMS, and boosts stamina and strength. It also has the highest amount of amino acids.

Not only does Maca have a lot of health benefits but it has calcium, magnesium and iron. It also contains Vitamin C, B1, B2, B6, B12 and a lot of fibre.

From what I read, Peruvians have been using this root for thousands of years. I was a bit concerned about side effects (as you always should be when you start trying a new supplement) but I decided since it was natural, and seemingly safe, I would give it a try. What women could say no to balanced hormones and increased energy?

While this doesn’t necessarily help with weight loss, those effects can be seen with this supplement. Reduced stress, more energy, balance hormones, all of those can lead to weight loss. That’s not necessarily what I’m hoping to get out of this though. Yes, it would be a benefit, but remember, the goal is to look good and feel good. That doesn’t necessarily mean losing weight. That can mean having more energy, sleeping better, being happier etc.

Getting up early for the gym feels great..for awhile. In the morning I feel energized, ready to face the world. By the time noon rolls around I’m ready to sleep. I’m tired and my eyes feel heavy. By the time evening rolls around I’m basically useless. If there’s something natural that can give me the energy I say “yes please!”

I’ve been adding this powder to my smoothies. The first time I opened the package I was met with a very strange, strong, scent. I added 2 teaspoons (they recommend 1-3 teaspoons for beginners) to my smoothie and was getting a bit concerned about how this would go over. I made the rest of my smoothie as normal and took my first sip. Wow. Was that ever horrible tasting. I don’t even know how to describe the smell or taste, but I can say it definitely tastes like it smells. My hope was that the benefits would be worth having a horrible smoothie every morning, or that I could find ways to alleviate that taste. I found that adding more juice to the smoothie helped sweeten the overall taste and lessen the strong flavour.

I’ve been taking Maca in my smoothies for a week now. I would say that my sleep quality has definitely gone up. It took me way less time to fall asleep then it usually does. Typically I wake up once during the night and have a very hard time falling back asleep. This past week I would wake up that one time, get up and go to the bathroom, then I’m asleep almost as soon as my head hits the pillow again. During the day I also feel more alert. I don’t feel my eyes getting heavy like I usually do mid-afternoon. That’s probably due to getting a better sleep during the night. I’m going to continue taking this powder until the package is empty and I look forward to seeing what other results I see/feel.
