Birchbox (referral link) is a monthly subscription box that sends you five personalized beauty items from hair, skincare, make up and Birchbox exclusives. The cost is $10 a month plus $4.95 shipping to Canada. You can fill out a style profile that will help them decide which variety of products they will send to you. You can buy full sized products through the Birchbox store and you can earn points towards purchases as well. After the 10th of each month you are able to go onto your account and view your box should you desire. They have also recently introduced Sample Choice for Canada. Before the end of the month you will be able to pick one of your items, it may be picking from a brand or just color. You can also opt to receive a special editors box, which has items that you know about beforehand.
My Birchbox reviews are going to start looking a little bit different than they used to. Since we now have sample choice, and the special editors box, I have opened a second account. Each month I will be doing a review on both boxes. First we will be looking at the regular box. This is the box I received on my new account, which I realized I did wrong. Since this was the first purchase done, I received items I’ve gotten in the past. In the future I will use this account for the special editor box to avoid this.
LOVE this box! The colors are gorgeous and work great with the flower pattern. I’ve been keeping all my boxes and if they keep looking like this, I will definitely continue with that!
LOC One & Done Shadow Stick–This is the new Birchbox brand of makeup. The colors are handpicked by YouTube star Tati Westbrook. If you buy the full size it comes as a trio, but for this I received On Point which is a silvery taupe color. It’s paraben-free and cruelty free, and you can either wear it alone or blend it for a different look. They are also waterproof and last up to 11 hours.
Temple Spa La La Lagoon Aromatic Bath & Shower Gel–This is infused with botanicals like mint, peppermint and basil, and can help soothe your daily stress while softening and smoothing your skin. The scent of this is quite flowery with slight peppermint. I’m definitely not a fan of it, and don’t really want to smell this all day!
Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentre (24 Hour Miracle Cream)–Due to the amount of shea butter and aloe vera this moisturizer gives the skin a silky finish. It also doubles as make up remover, post-shave soother and all over body lotion. I’ve actually received it before. I think I used it once on my legs, then I either forgot about it or used it all up in that one shot, I can’t quite remember. Either way, I may or may not use it again, I didn’t really have feelings either way about it.
Briogeo Blossom & Bloom Volumizing Blow Dry Spray–This follicle-stimulating spray enhances hair’s thickness and encourages natural, healthy growth over time. It contains ginseng, biotin, B Vitamins and ginger root. It’s packed with an energizing blend of hair loving nutrients and maltodextrin, which is a natural sugar starch, that coats every strand of your hair to create a fuller appearance. You just spray it on before blow-drying, paying special attention to the roots. This is another item that I’ve received before. I can always use more hair products since I shower almost every day after the gym, and always blow dry my hair.
Beauty Protector Protect & Oil–This is a new launch by Beauty Protector. It’s suitable for all hair times and is lightweight. It protects against UV rays and heat damage. This product uses argan oil to protect, strengthen and add a bit of a gloss to your hair. Just smooth 1-3 drops into damp hair working from the roots to the ends, or add a small amount to the ends of hair to tame frizz. The smell of this alone is enough to make me want to use it, only way I can think to describe it is like candy. It seems to work well enough, my hair looked smoother and shinier with it. A little bit seems to go along way, but I’m glad to see they included two!
So this is the special editors box. There is nothing really special about the box itself, I don’t feel over inclined to keep it, which is probably a good thing since my box collection is getting big!
Loc One & Done Shadow Stick–So this is exactly the same as the one above, but thankfully in a different color. This one is Day Trip, which is a warm copper.
Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentre (24 Hour Miracle Cream)–I was disappointed to see this in both boxes, though that wouldn’t have happened had I ordered the proper box under the proper account. Lesson learned!
Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool firming Eye Gels–These are loaded with Icelandic glacial water and Arctic botanical extracts and reduce puffiness and fine lines, while brightening, firming and soothing the skin under your eyes. You can also put them in the fridge for 5 minutes before using for an extra fresh experience. I’ve received this in the past, and really didn’t notice it doing anything. With regular use I’m sure you would, but a one time use doesn’t seem to do much. It is relaxing though!
The Balm Cosmetics Frat Boy–This is a shadow/blush and is a talc-free finely ground formula. I do have an appreciation for the packaging this company uses since it always has a retro look, unfortunately I don’t use blush. This will find a new home!
Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo–This powder soaks up oil, sweat and odor. The patented molecules allow for easy removal so your hair looks, feels and smells cleaner. Just shake can well, hold 6-10″ away from dry hair and apply. Wait 30 seconds for the powders to activate, then remove by massaging and shaking at roots with fingers or brush hair. Ever since I started working out as often as I do, I’ve struggled with second day greasy hair. There is no way I’m not going to shower and wash my hair after the gym (trust me, it’s better for everyone), so when I go a day without showering my hair gets oily. I’m weary about powdered dry shampoo since I always hear about it leaving residue in darker hair. This one doesn’t seem to leave any residue, and does take away the oil
This was the first time that Canada had access to sample choice and the editor box, so I’m still figuring my way around that. I’m pretty happy with most items, I’ll either use or easily gift each one so that’s a win IMO. There was nothing absolutely horrible that I’m tired of receiving, so that’s good!
