Seriously, my favorite thing about Birchbox is seeing what kind of design they came up with each month for their boxes! I love the mixture of patterns and colors they used for March!
March’s theme was “Creativity”. They put together a box that encourages experimentation by mixing and matching colors and scents to create something wonderful. I’m still thrilled that Birchbox doesn’t use the annoying crinkle paper for their boxes. I love how neat and orderly everything looks upon opening the box. I instantly recognized one item, and was curious to dig into the remaining.
Paula’s Choice Resist Barrier Repair Moisturizer with Retinol–This is a wrinkle fighting moisturizer that gives a rejuvenating boost to your daily routine. Delivers moisture, evens tone, firms skin and reduces the appearance of fine lines. It’s loaded with antioxidants that support collagen production, retinol which is a tried and true wrinkle reducer, and shea butter among other moisturizers which leaves the skin smoother, firmer and more youthful. They warn that retinol can make the skin extra sensitive to the sun, so to make sure you follow it with an SPF if you put it on in the morning. I did try a little bit of this, and it made my skin feel soft and absorbed quickly. I don’t like the idea of having to wear sunscreen on top of my other products because of the retinol though. I may put this away for winter when I’m not outside, but at this time it doesn’t feel practical.
Harvey Prince Ageless Pink Grapefruit fragrance–This particular fragrance with created by the brother duo as a Mother’s Day gift for their mother. They used research to develop a fragrance that’s calibrated to make you smell more youthful. This resulted in a mix of citrus notes and blossomy florals. Studies have shown that when fatty acids in our skin begin to break down, they emit an odor. Pink grapefruit and mango are able to counteract that smell. The scent also has layers of fresh citrus, pomegranate, and mango as well as jasmine, ylang-ylang, and sandalwood. I find the science behind this very interesting. I also quite like the smell. I used to hate fragrances, but I find myself enjoying them more and more. I’m not surprised that I like this though, I love grapefruit whether it be the fruit, juice, flavor, scent.
Number Four Hydrating Shampoo–This shampoo is great for hair if it’s over-processed and brittle, or just chronically dry. It’s gentle enough to use every day and helps to soften and hydrate strands with natural essential oils and extracts. They use vitamin B5 to condition hair and silicone to bump up the gloss factor. It bothers me that they include shampoo, but not conditioner. Though, I am happy that it’s a small bottle rather than a foil sample. That being said, my hair definitely isn’t over-processed, brittle, or dry. I’ll probably set this aside to possibly use one day, or maybe gift.
Mirenesse Mattfinity Lip Rouge–This is an Australian brand and it gives the perfect matte lip look. It has a smooth, hydrating formula that makes for easy application and a polished look. The color is formulated to stay in place all day and the mousse like texture fills in lines for fuller lips. The Gel-lite technology also delivers vibrant color that doesn’t fade or feather. I’m not too sure how I feel about this. First, I actually thought something was wrong with it because of the black, but turns out it’s just the packaging. This is extremely pigmented. Like beyond anything. I did like the matte look of it, but it was a bit of a pinky orange and definitely not for everyday wear.
beautyblenderBBF & mini solid cleanser–The soft texture and elliptical shape of this sponge allows foundation to blend into skin with a natural finish and no streaks. When saturated with water the sponge expands into twice it’s normal size, which makes it easy to cover your whole face while getting into the nooks and crannies. Using it damp prevents it from absorbing excess foundation so you don’t waste any makeup. It also comes with a soy based cleanser to clean your tools and keep them in like-new condition, and it dissolves any dirt and debris that may be trapped in your brushes or sponges. All you have to do it wet the sponge and squeeze out the excess. Pick up a small amount of foundation with the blender and apply it to your skin with a tapping motion to distribute and blend. You can use the small point to reach the small areas near your nose and eyes. This is an expensive item, and I’m really impressed that they included this! It works great and I don’t have any other sponges so it’s very helpful. It makes applying product much easier, I highly recommend this item!
I’m still thrilled that BB is shipping to Canada now. The beautyblender alone made this well worth it, even though I’m not overly thrilled about the rest of the products. I’ll definitely use up the fragrance, and the lip rouge will be used on those times that I need a statement lip. The shampoo will probably sit around for a long time, and I’ll stash away the moisturizer until winter when I don’t see the sun. Can’t wait to see what next month brings!
