Birchbox (referral link) is a monthly subscription box that sends you five personalized beauty items from hair, skincare, make up and Birchbox exclusives. The cost is $10 a month plus $4.95 shipping to Canada. You can fill out a style profile that will help them decide which variety of products they will send to you. You can buy full sized products through the Birchbox store and you can earn points towards purchases as well. After the 10th of each month you are able to go onto your account and view your box should you desire.
There were three different box types this month. One was blue and said “Say Yes”, another was more of a purple and said “Adventure is a State of Mind” and then there is the one that I got. I was fairly neutral about which one I would end up with, so I’m happy enough. It’s not my favorite color, but I’m okay with the saying.
Naobay Oxygenating Cream Moisturizer–This is an eco-conscious moisturizer that is loaded with essential fatty acids from avocado and olive oils. The healthy fats nourish the skin, leaving it hydrated and smooth. It’s made from 98% natural ingredients, and 20% organic ingredients. I really like the idea behind this product and the healthy fats nourishing the skin, but I’m not a huge fan of the product itself. I felt it made my face feel a little bit sticky and it didn’t seem to absorb very well. One bonus is that there isn’t much of a scent to it.
Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool firming Eye Gels–These are loaded with Icelandic glacial water and Arctic botanical extracts and reduce puffiness and fine lines, while brightening, firming and soothing the skin under your eyes. You can also put them in the fridge for 5 minutes before using for an extra fresh experience. Even without having these in the fridge first, they still felt a bit cooling. It felt relaxing to have this on, though I didn’t notice any difference under my eyes. I don’t really have puffy eye problems to that’s probably why. I did enjoy this though!
Beauty Protector Beauty Wash Body Cleanser–This leaves the skin fresh and clean and goes along with the shampoo that Birchbox carries of the same brand. I haven’t tried it yet, but I’m loving the scent of it. It’s a fairly light fragrance, and makes me think of candy. I think I’m going to take this one along on our camping trip to use, assuming I get the opportunity to shower!
Parlor by Jeff Chastain Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray–This beach spray offers instant volume and tousled texture. Sweet almond extract infuses strands with softness, fullness and brilliance. The vitamin-rich algae extract also nourishes and protects the scalp. It also has the scent of ripe peach, fresh-cut grass, and white woods. Okay, quite disappointed about receiving this. I feel like most people with short hair aren’t too concerned about having tousled beach waves. I had filled out a survey saying that my hair was too short for a ponytail, and it seems like if your hair is that short, they shouldn’t send you a product like this. At this current point in time, I have no plans to go back to long hair so this is useless to me.
Coastal Scents Revealed 3 Eyeshadow Quad–The full size version of this has 20 shadows in a variety of different shades. This is the third palette from this company. They sent out a sample size consisting of four of the shades. The colors aren’t terrible for me, but I rarely end up using the small samples like this. This brand definitely has a good reputation though so I’m impressed to see it in this box.
Pura Vida Lace Headband–They included a bonus item this month because an item that was released as a spoiler for this box ended up being stuck in customs. Unfortunately, my hair is again too short for something like this. I realize that everyone received either this or the hair ties, but I think they should have come up with another item for those with short hair. A headband like this is nothing that I could ever use with my hairstyle.
Even though I have some disappointment about receiving two products that didn’t line up with my style profile, I do have to give Birchbox some credit. I contacted them about my disappointment and they actually issued me 50 points, which is good for $5 in their store. I do appreciate that gesture, and I will definitely use that. I’ve been saving up my points so far to do a big splurge, so this helps. Aside from those products, this was still a bit of a boring box. The eye shadow likely won’t get used, the body wash is nothing special, and the eye gels were gone in one use. I’m thinking June was just a bad month for subscriptions!
