Aerial Hammock

My weight has gone up since I finished my last DietBet in June. The good news is that even though my weight has gone up, my body fat percent has gone down. This obviously means that I’m building muscle. So how have I been doing that?

Well, I did something that scares me.

I love going to the gym in the morning. I get there first thing, get my usual locker and go through my cardio/strength training routine. I use the same treadmill and have the same cycle on the weight machines every day. I’m a creature of habit. I don’t have to talk to anyone, I just do my thing and go home.

I have no problem admitting to the fact that I don’t care for social situations, in fact I’m often awkward in them. I have my group of friends and I’m comfortable in that. I’m even more comfortable just relaxing at home with my husband. I often have to really work myself up if I know I’m going to be facing a social situation, especially something that is new for me. If it’s a situation where it’s a small group, I’m usually fine. When it’s a bigger group, I just prefer to observe rather than be involved.

So what did I do? I signed up for an Aerial Hammock class at ClubMynx. Not knowing what to expect and not knowing anyone else in it. This is not something I do. I don’t enjoy doing things like that. I was debating whether or not to sign up and there was one spot left. I made a rash decision because it might have been too late otherwise.

I don’t regret it.

I’m chronically early to things so on the first day I had time to go in and sit before other people started showing up. I really liked the decor. ClubMynx has a variety of classes such as Pole Fitness,  Aerial Hammock/Hoop/Silks, and Barre. The decor seemed to suit all of those well. It was classy and elegant. I love the colors and chandeliers. There are a few different seating areas and the pink couch is the one I went straight for and have sat at every time waiting for the class to start.

There was 7 people in the class, plus the instructor Kate. She did a great job at making everyone feel welcome which was great. She would demonstrate each move for us, and then walk us through it. She was able to gauge what level everyone was at and challenged us through that.

We were all beginners, but we were pretty good! We caught on fairly quick and were able to get the moves down. I never once felt intimidated, which was kind of surprising. Normally I watch people do things like this and just think there is no way I could do it. Because of how Kate demonstrated the moves and helped us, I never felt that way.

At the first try some moves were tricky to get right. There are so many key points to doing the moves properly, whether it be getting your legs to the right height, holding on with the correct hand, or keeping your legs straight. Looking at these pictures I can pinpoint those things that I would need to work on. Even something as simple as how the toes should be facing opposite directions!

Some moves took more practice than others, and some caused a lot more pain than others! On the other hand, some were comfy and easy!

It’s become normal for me to have bruises on my thighs and hips from the hammock. As classes went on though, it became less painful. Moves that I couldn’t hold for more than a couple of seconds become more comfortable.

We always did some conditioning before class, largely focusing on your core and arms. There is a good reason for that. You often have to use your core to get into positions, and definitely use your arms a lot! I learned during this time that I really lack in my upper arm strength. Like, badly. This is great though. I’m now aware and able to really focus on changing that.

I’m sure you can see by some of these moves just the amount of strength needed to do them properly!

I really enjoyed how methodical everything was. Before and after classes I’d be running through the needed steps in my head. What side to hold on to, which way your foot would face etc. As the moves were demonstrated I’d be doing the same thing. This was actually a great way to help me fall asleep at night sometimes!

I’m by no means ready to go onto intermediate. I definitely can see myself signing up for the beginner class again though, after I work at upping my arm strength. I also have some friends now interested in joining me sometime!

It’s no wonder that I was able to build some muscle mass by doing this. Even though this was only once a week for an hour, I could definitely feel it for days after. This was such a great experience though and I’m so glad that I did something that scared me.

Now, the big question. What can I do in September to help keep and get more of these results?! Check back next month to find out!

  • This caught my eye, because I recently installed a yoga trapeze at home and am learning a few moves on there. It’s very interesting and I love building on my flexibility and strength. Thanks for sharing this and hope you keep at it. Cheers, Maria

    • Thanks for stopping by Maria! I had to look up a yoga trapeze because I hadn’t heard of that before. That looks really neat!

  • The Nickel Nook

Wow!! That’s fantastic! Great photos of you! Looks like a nice place and a wonderful workout! 🙂
