February Update & March Goals

Rather than a yearly bucket list or New Years resolutions, I decided to pick one word to represent 2017, and set up mini goals for each month to help me reach my ultimate goals. The word I chose is STRIVE, and you can find out more behind my reasoning by reading this post.

Let’s take a look at how February went!

February

I will strive…to be healthy.

  • Go to the gym 20 times. NO. 19 times. SO CLOSE! I’m disappointed that I didn’t make my goal of 20, but sometimes life happens. I have gone 40 times so far this year, which is still a great accomplishment and something to be proud of.
  • Continue to meal plan. YES. I’m still loving this whole “meal planning” thing. We don’t follow it 100% and I sometimes switch which days I’m making what, but it’s made things so much easier. It’s nice knowing the night before if I need to take something out of the freezer, or coming home and already having a plan of what to do.
  • Eat vegetables five nights a week. YES. If I didn’t steam frozen veggies I AT LEAST ate salad with supper. This helped fill me up and snack less in the evening, and eat less overall. My whole goal behind this was to increase my veggie intake, I have been having salad at lunch as well so I have definitely accomplished this.
  • Cut down on snacking. YES. I’m counting this as a win this month. Starburst is my downfall right now, but it’s a small flavorful snack so I’m okay with that. I have one or two, and then I’m satisfied. I know that I’ll never be able to cut snacking out entirely, but the decrease is what I’ve needed.

I will strive..to spend less.

  • Re asses the boxes that I get each month and decide which I really want. YES. Right now I am only getting Love With Food, Trillia Planning, Topbox each month. I’ll get Juneberry bi-monthly and Fitbox Quarterly. There are some other boxes I may get from time to time (like Loot Crate shirt sub for Ian), but I’m happy with where I’m at for now. I really enjoy this boxes and everything gets put to use, it’s not just clutter.
  • No unplanned/splurge purchases. YES. I made one unplanned purchase, and it ended up being damaged and getting returned. I’m super proud of accomplishing this! I did buy a Fabletics outfit this month, but that was something that I planned on purchasing when I saw one of the new patterns.
  • Spend less than February 2016 (1007.77). YES. I kept my spending at $953.44, which is a decrease of $54.33. February of last year I was in Las Vegas/LA for just over a week with most of my expenses covered, including some spending money. I also paid for two months of my car insurance this month, whereas I normally just do one. It’s around $110 for one month, but it was just short of $200 for two months. Given that I had extra expenses this month (compared to last year) I’m very excited to not only be $50 under last year, but to have been under $1000!
  • Move $200 into savings by months end. NO. I’m okay with the ‘no’ on this one. I did great on my spending, but Ian had to have some transmission work done on his vehicle. Unexpected expenses like that are why I want to start moving money into savings though. So while I didn’t accomplish this, I still see it as a partial win since the reasoning wasn’t just that I spent it on frivolous items.

I will strive..to declutter.

  • Clean at least one room/space. YES. I cleaned out our front hall closet. I pulled out the shoes, organized them better, cleaned off the shelves etc. I could probably get rid of a few more pairs of shoes and jackets, but I’m holding off for now. It looks way better though, and there is a ton of empty space on the two shelves in there now. More storage for future cleaning! I also went through my clothes and posted a bunch for sale online.
  • Find a spot for anything new I bring in. If I can’t, then it goes back out. YES. I actually really didn’t bring in much of anything this month, but I put away what I did. This has led to less clutter sitting around, and makes it easier to actually use items.
  • Keep the laundry room clean!
  • Go through all my sample products and donate/throw out what I won’t use. YES. It was nice to do this! I re-organized items and threw out things I had tried but didn’t like.

I will strive..to experience more

  • Try something new. Anything. It doesn’t matter what. NO. I’m a bit disappointed in myself on this one. I think I just kept waiting for an opportunity to present itself rather than actually going out and seeking something new. This is something for me to think about more in the future.
  • Read a book. NO. This is just a technical no. About 1 week into the month I started to read The Hobbit. I read for approximently 20 minutes every day before work, but I’ve still got approximently 50 pages left. So, while I didn’t read a full book I did still come very close to accomplishing this goal.
  • Go on two special dates with Ian. February is Valentine’s so this deserves two dates! YES. Cineplex Theatre had a Flashback Film Festival, and one of the movies they played was The Princess Bride. I love that movie and knew that we had to go. We hadn’t been to a movie in over a year (Sisters was the last one) so it was nice to mix it up a bit. We also had a good supper out at Pink Cadillacs, our go-to for a meal out, the weekend before Valentines Day. We actually ate out way less than usual this month so it was nice that the times we did felt a bit more special!
  • Have a relaxing soak in the tub. NO. I just felt like there wasn’t time this month to seclude myself and relax in the tub. Though, maybe I would have finished my book if I had done this!
  • Watch a movie I haven’t seen before. NO. I did watch some shows that I hadn’t seen before though! We got an Android Box for streaming TV shows and movies, which has allowed us to watch some shows we originally missed out on. This month we finished watching all four seasons of Franklin & Bash, got all caught up on New Girl and we are currently watching The Finder.

February was a shorter month, and it went about as fast as I expected it to. Weeks and weekends felt full, but nothing too overwhelming. I even managed to do a big closet clean out. I posted a bunch of pictures on a couple of Facebook groups that I’m in as an attempt to recoup some money for them. I’m not in any huge rush so I’m hoping that overtime items will sell. I did have three go already!

March

I will strive…to be healthy.

  • Go to the gym 23 times. I’ve been going 5 times a week (usually) these past two months, I’d like to continue that into March. I’m still not seeing/feeling the changes that I had hoped to at this point, but it’s still a great habit to have.
  • Continue to meal plan and incorporate vegetables. I know that I have the workout part down, I still need to focus on my food intake. I did snack less in February, but I know I still have work that can be done in this area.
  • Stick to my workout plan. I have a 6 week workout plan that I keep starting, but I never make it past the first week before reverting back to my cardio. I know the benefits of weights, but cardio is just my go-to. I’d like to follow though with all 6 weeks, starting on Monday, March 6th.
  • Lose 5+ pounds, or any inches. I’d like to start seeing more results from these changes that I’m making in my diet and exercise routines.

I will strive..to spend less.

  • Spend less than March 2016 ($1291.04).
  • Move $200 into savings. I didn’t get to do this in February, so I’m hoping to offset that this month.
  • Keep my spending under $1000. I’m putting this as a separate goal because I feel as though it will take a different focus than just spending less than last year.

I will strive..to declutter.

  • Keep on top of the recycling. We live on the third floor, so recycling cardboard gets to be a bit of a hassle. We store it in our laundry room, and the pile tends to grow a lot before we finally take it out. Then I end up taking 5+ trips up and down the stairs to bring it to the bin outside. I’d like to start staying on top of this, with the weather warming up hopefully it will be easier to do.
  • Clean/organize one area. I already did the two least daunting areas, so let’s see what I can do this month!

I will strive..to experience more

  • Have two fun outings. I want to focus on this more than dates this month. Sometimes it’s hard to determine the difference between a date and us just going out, so I just want to go out twice and do something fun.
  • Try something new. I’m going to be more intentional about following through with this goal in March.
  • Have some “me” time. Whether this means soaking in the tub or treating myself out to something, I want to just enjoy some time spent purposefully on myself.
  • Finish Hobbit and read another book. I’ve really enjoyed my quiet mornings with time spent reading, I’d like to continue this. Just need to pick out a new book!

I’m looking forward to March. The days are getting longer and it’s actually fully light out when I go to work in the morning and on my drive home, though it’s still VERY dark when I go to the gym in the morning. We are ending February with a bit of a cold spell, but I know that warmer weather is on it’s way. I have good feelings towards this year so far, and I don’t expect March to let me down in any way!
